The family of a 6 year old girl with severe brain damage has been given an interim settlement of 2.6 million for failings in her care after she was born.
Both the HSE and University Hospital Galway have apologised to Sadhbh Farrell in the High Court today
The Court had been told Sadhbh was visibly jaundiced in the hours after her birth in January 2011 - but she was discharged from hospital without any tests.
Lawyers said that a simple and inexpensive treatment for the condition was given too late.
Sadhbh now needs 24 hour care and is dependant on her family and carers for all her needs.
The case will come back before the court in 2022 to decide on her future care.
Speaking after the decision, Sadhbh's parents Niamh and Shane Farrell said she was the adored baby of their family.
They described her as a "beautiful, bright and very determined little girl" whose smile lights up their world.
They said the failings in her medical care in the days following her birth will restrict her ability to live out every aspect of her life to fulfil her dreams and also the dreams they had for Sadhbh.
They said the interim settlement will never remove their ongoing grief for the independent life lost to Sadhbh, but will now help her to get the care and support needed to have every opportunity to live as full a life as possible.
