Investigation launched into Letterkenny Hospital flooding

The group responsible for Letterkenny General Hospital says it would be happy to co-operate with any independent inquiry into flooding at the facility.

The C-O-O of West-North West Hospital Group - Tony Canavan says he understands people’s concerns about the site in Donegal - which has been hit by flooding twice in a year.

An estimated 40 million euro in damage was caused in last year’s disaster - while the emergency department was closed for 3 hours last night as emergency crews worked to remove floodwater.

Mr Canavan says management has already launched its own investigation - but he would be happy to take part in any further inquiry.

 

The hospitalÂ’s Emergency Department went offline for three hours last night - with patients diverted as far away as Sligo.

Local politicians are now calling for an independent inquiry into why the hospital was allowed to be built in an area at risk of flooding.

Emergency crews attended the scene from 7 o’clock last night when over 40 milimetres of rain fell in just 15 minutes.

Staff had sandbaggged the entrance to prevent Floodwaters entering the Emergency department.

The Hospital has already announced an investigation - but locals say that’s not good enough - wondering how it could happen less than a year after 40 million euro in damage was caused;
