Ireland is set to miss its target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 20% by 2020.
A review by the Climate Change Advisory Council shows that while we've met our annual targets up to 2015, emissions are now increasing, in line with economic growth.
At the moment we're on course to only reduce our emissions by 4 or 5 per cent compared to 2005 -missing the target by a massive 14-15 per cent.
The council's made a number of recommendations to get us back on track to reducing emissions by 40% by 2030 and 80 per cent by 2050
These include increasing the use of renewable energy and making more homes energy efficient
The government's published a National Mitigation Plan, but the council says it now needs to take decisions on these suggestions with transport and agriculture a key focus
It's also pointing out that reducing our reliance on carbon fuels will make us more independent from other countries and will have health benefits.
