Irish troops won't be pulled from Golan without approval from UN

The Foreign Affairs Minister says it wouldnÂ’t be wise to pull Irish troops out of the Golan Heights without prior approval from the UN.

Charlie Flanagan was speaking ahead of todayÂ’'s Cabinet meeting - during which the review of the Defence ForcesÂ’ role in the volatile region between Syria and Israel will be discussed.

There are growing concerns about the safety of Irish soldiers in Golan - following the kidnapping of UN peacekeepers from Fiji and the Philippines as well as the rise of Islamic State militants.

Charlie Flanagan says the review will be completed at “the earliest possible date” - but pulling the troops out without UN approval would be unwise.
