No Irish university has managed to make it into the top 200 universities in the world.
Both Trinity and UCD - who were ranked number 160 and 176 respectively last year - have dropped outside the top 200, with Trinity being excluded for submitting incorrect data.
The Times Higher Education World University Rankings show improvements for NUI Galway and the Royal College of Surgeons - which have both entered the top 250.
The four other third-level institutions remain unchanged in the rankings, published tonight.
UCC is listed in the 351-400 range, while DCU stands at 401-500. The University of Limerick is still at 501-600, just above DIT, which comes in within the 601-800 bracket.
TCD contacted the ranking agency to point out the error, which appears to have been unintentional, according to THE.
It is believed the mistake would have likely given it a lower ranking than would otherwise be the case.
A spokesperson for the university said it was working with THE to resolve the issue.
The UK's University of Oxford is the top ranked university - the first time that the top spot has gone to a university outside the US.
