Former Republic of Ireland football manager died yesterday

Former Republic of Ireland football manager Jack Charlton has died at the age of 85.

The former Leeds and England defender had been diagnosed with lymphoma in the last year and was also battling dementia.

Known affectionately as Big Jack, the Newcastle native brought Ireland to Euro 88, Italia 90 and USA 94.

He spent his entire 21-year playing career at Leeds, making a joint club record 773 appearances, before retiring as a player in 1973 and going on to enjoy a successful  career as a manager.

He had spells in charge of Sheffield Wednesday, Middlesbrough and  Newcastle.

His golden moment as a player came at Wembley in 1966 when he and brother Bobby were team-mates in England’s World Cup win against West Germany after extra time.

The Football Association of Ireland has described Jack Charlton as "the manager who changed Irish football forever".

They said: "The FAI is deeply saddened to learn of the death of Jack Charlton, the manager who changed Irish football forever. Our thoughts are with Pat and the family at this sad time.

In a statement, his family said: "As well as a friend to many, he was a much-adored husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

"We cannot express how proud we are of the extraordinary life he led and the pleasure he brought to so many people in different countries and from all walks of life.

"He was a thoroughly honest, kind, funny and genuine man who always had time for people.

Jack is married to Pat Kemp in 1958 and they have three children together.
