Knives and Earthquakes: The GE16 headlines

The Sunday Independent says "Taoiseach Enda Kenny will come under intense pressure to resign as leader of Fine Gael". Under the headline "A Political Earthquake", the paper says that Mr Kenny's ambition to becomes the first Fine Gael Taoiseach to serve two successive terms is "all but destroyed". 

The Sunday Business Post has another seismic-themed headline. It goes with "Kenny in the firing line as voters deliver earthquake". The paper says voters have "abruptly rearranged the Irish political landscape in a manner more dramatic than any election in the history of the state". The paper says the focus is now on government formation. It quotes Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin saying he will seek partners in coalition "outside Fine Gael and Sinn Féin". 

The Irish Mail on Sunday headline is "Knives out for Kenny". It suggests the "considerable gains made by Fianna Fáil have secured Micheál Martin's position as party leader and boosted his chances of becoming the next taoiseach." It reports that Fine Gael strategists believe their best result would be 53 seats, "but it could be as low as 43".

The Sunday Times leads with "Fine Gael mauled by electorate" and quotes former Fine Gael minister Alan Shatter criticising the party's "catastrophic" campaign. Mr Shatter, who lost his seat, said "it's difficult to understand how senior colleagues, who made these decisions with their advisers, managed to set the wrong tone from day one".
