Landlords Object To More Housing 'Bureaucracy'

Landlords are objecting to what they call more 'bureaucracy' in the housing market.

An Oireachtas Committee this morning will discuss the potential of putting homeless families in shared hubs instead of hotels.

It comes after Housing Minister Eoghan Murphy yesterday declared two further rent-controlled pressure zones - Drogheda in Co Louth, and Greystones in Co Wicklow.

There are now 21 Rent Pressure Zones, where rents cannot be increased by more than 4% a year.

Fintan Mc Namara of the Residential Landlords Association, however, says the Government has interfered enough:

The Social Democrats, meanwhile, say zoning new pressure areas does not stop rents going up elsewhere - suggesting it may actually speed up the process.

The party's co-leader and Kildare TD Catherine Murphy said: "It's a help, but I think what it will inevitably do is it will put pressure on the areas that are just adjacent to the ones that are now included."

The Dáil will today debate calls for a referendum to insert 'the right to housing' into the Constitution.

The Solidarity / People Before Profit housing bill also proposes to 'de-limit' the right to private property.
