A Longford man has appeared in court after allegedly telling a garda that she and her colleagues "should be shot" like her "friend in Castlerea".

Longford District Court heard the man was intoxicated at the time and he apologised to the Garda in court for making the comments about the late Detective Garda Colm Horkan, who was killed last week.

The accused had caused a disturbance outside the District Court this morning and was subsequently told to leave the area.

He was charged with threatening and abusive language, as well as failing to comply with a Garda's direction.

The accused has 26 previous convictions and Judge Hughes warned him that he would need to bring €350 into court with him for his next appearance on September 1st when the case will be finalised.
