Convicted rapist Michael Murray has had his sentence increased for the brutal rape of a mother he lured into an apartment in Dublin.
Murray, formerly of Killiney Oaks, Killiney in Dublin, was sentenced to 15 years in 2013 but the DPP appealed the sentence on the grounds of undue leniency.
The Court of Appeal agreed and increased it by four years today.
On Feb 12th 2010, Murray lured the woman into an apartment in Dublin city by telling her an elderly woman was dying inside.
She was walking her four-year-old son home from the playground, but agreed to go in to see if she could help her.
Once inside, he tied her up and assaulted her before taking her son away and abandoning him in a city centre square in the middle of the night.
He then returned to the apartment where he spent the next 13 hours repeatedly raping her.
His trial heard he drugged her and humiliated and degraded her by making her dress up in different outfits.
He eventually left the apartment and she managed to untie herself and raise the alarm. She had sustained some serious injuries and Murray had threatened to kill her.
In her victim impact statement, she said she thought Ireland was a safe country for her and her husband to raise her family but she said she wasn’t sure anymore.
The court heard she has since moved out of Dublin as a result of the attack.
Murray, who is now 46, was convicted in 2013 and jailed for 15 years but the Court of Appeal today agreed with the DPP that his sentence was unduly lenient.
Considering his previous record, the appalling nature of what he did and the complete lack of mitigation, Mr Justice George Birmingham said the court decided a 19-year sentence was more appropriate.
Murray wasn’t there to hear the judgement. Moments before it was delivered, he stormed out of the dock and back into the holding cells.
