The competition watchdog is calling on schools to have more options for uniforms.

A third of parents feel they're not getting good value for money, according to a new survey by the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC).

A report by the CCPC highlights the cost of school uniforms on families.

The majority of parents support uniforms, but a third feel they're not getting value for money and 41% feel there's not enough choice.

Three-quarters of schools have at least one item that has to be bought in a recommended shop.

The consumer watchdog says costs can be driven up by branded uniforms and exclusive retailers.

It's recommending that more generic items be allowed and says there should be multiple suppliers to encourage competition.

Director of Communications with the CCPC, Gráinne Griffin, says schools have historical agreements with retailers that often aren't even written.

" These arrangements are long standing, but even if there was a written agreement in place, they should be reviewed every two to three years.

"This would make sure that the companies supplying school uniforms, or devices, are offering good value and a good service and that parents are getting what they pay for".
