There's a critical shortage of homes in regional cities suitable for housing assistance schemes, according to the Simon Community.

The group has studied property listings for Ireland's main towns and cities.

The Locked Out Of The Market Survey shows that 738 homes were available to rent within the limits of HAP, while 94 percent of those were in Dublin.

There were no homes available in Athlone, Cork City Centre, Galway City Centre, Limerick City, Sligo Town, Portlaoise and Waterford City Centre.

Wayne Stanley from the Simon Community says the eviction ban for the pandemic is helping keep low-income people from homelessness, for now.

"They're currently protected by the moratorium on evictions but they're also going to be impacted once the moratorium falls. They're going to have to leave that property. They're going to have to find somewhere else, but the market isn't moving at the same pace that we move up and down levels of restrictions because of Covid.  So what we need to see really is around the country is people protected, so no one can be evicted into homelessness."
