North Korea has fired a ballistic missile over Japan, with the projectile falling into waters off the country's eastern coastline.
The Japanese government's warning system urged people in an area in the north of the country to take precautions early on Tuesday morning.
But the country's military did not attempt to shoot down the missile, which broke into three pieces and fell into seas to the east of Japan's northern Hokkaido island.
South Korea's military said the missile was fired from North Korea's Sunan region, near capital Pyongyang, just before 6am local time.
Recent tensions between North Korea and the US and its allies had appeared to have eased after weeks of threats.
The Japanese government issued a warning to its people as it flew over the north of its country.

Scarrry but I appreciate all the warning systems. There's one on the phone too. Everything is just buzzing. pic.twitter.com/cooCGmluAP
