Former US President Barack Obama, and his wife Michelle, have been invited to accept their Freedom of Dublin award when they visit Ireland in September.

They were given Dublin's highest honour in 2017 by Dublin City Council, but have not formally accepted it.

Barack Obama will be in Dublin for his sold out event "An Evening With President Barack Obama" in the 3Arena on the 26 of September.

Dublin's Lord Mayor has invited the Obamas to come to the Mansion House to accept it the award, describing it as "a rare distinction reserved for individuals whose leadership, service and values have made a profound and lasting contribution to the world".

Lord Mayor, Ray McAdam said, the honour of the freedom of the city not only recognises "past achievements", but also "welcomes the Obamas as part of Dublin's story".

"This ceremony is a chance to affirm the values we hold dear in Dublin: democracy, decency, inclusion, and respect.

"The Obamas reflect those values, and I believe this is an important and appropriate moment to formally celebrate them."

Previous recipients of the Freedom of Dublin, include John F. Kennedy, Nelson Mandela, and Mother Teresa.

Among the benefits of being given the Freedom of Dublin, include being allowed to graze sheep on St Stephen's Green.

Barack Obama made an official visit to Ireland in May 2011 during his first term as US President.

He addressed crowds at a public event in Dublin city and visited the village of Moneygall in Co. Offaly, the ancestral home of his 3rd Great Grandfather, Falmouth Kearney.
