Royal Navy Submarine Put Fishing Crew's Lives At Risk

An investigation has found that a Royal Navy Submarine endangered the lives of a fishing crew in Co. Down, in an incident in April 2015.

The Karen was dragged backwards for 30 seconds when the submarine snagged its net.

Captain Paul Murphy feared for his life when his prawn trawler lurched and was dragged at 10 knots for about 30 seconds on April 15th 2015.

The Karen had four crew on board when it almost capsized and was only saved when its net snapped, 24 kilometres from Ardglass in Co. Down.

A report by the Marine Accident Investigation Branch says the lives of the crew were put at risk by the actions of the Royal Navy submarine. It found that commanders believed they were passing beneath a merchant cargo or passenger ship rather than a fishing vessel and didn't' realise what happened until three hours later.
