This year's National Ploughing Championship has been cancelled.

They were due to take place in Fenagh, Co. Carlow from September 15th to 17th.

The annual outdoor event, which is the biggest in Europe, has been called off due to Covid-19.

Organisers say they still hope there will be an opportunity to run the ploughing competitions behind closed gates.

The loss to the economy is reported to be around €45 million.

Assistant Managing Director of the even Anna Marie McHugh says it's hugely disappointing for all:

"It is for ourselves, but for the general public who needed the lift and the exhibitors. It's a huge thing for exhibitors that have done so badly with the business this year, to think that this option is gone for them as well."
