Actresses like Nicole Kidman were among those collecting prizes at the awards.
In the wake of the sexual harassment allegations that have rocked Hollywood in recent weeks, she says things are slowly changing.
The Australian star observed: "We're still very much in the beginning stages - and it requires an enormous amount of support from men & women. But it's about time."
Accepting an award, she added: "One of the first things I learned in my work with UN Women to support women survivors of violence is how critical the solidarity of others is.
"The feeling that they are not alone. That there is help. So let’s speak out. Let’s offer our support and create change."
