President-Elect Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin have held their first phone call since the US election.
The two leaders discussed Syria and agreed to improve bilateral ties.
In a statement, the Kremlin said the men agreed their common "enemy number one" was international terrorism and extremism.
Mr Trump was criticised during the election campaign for his links to Russia and his praise of Mr Putin's authoritarian government.
Meanwhile, US President Barack Obama says US alliances with the rest of the world will be maintained under Donald Trump.
He said that during talks with the President-elect, Mr Trump told him he was committed to the US role in the NATO military alliance.
During the campaign, Mr Trump said NATO was "obsolete".
