Donald Trump is to visit Ireland this month - just weeks after the Taoiseach described his comments as 'racist and dangerous'.

The presumptive Republican candidate for the US Presidency will arrive in three weeks' time, to visit his golf course in County Clare.

The visit will present practical and political problems for the government, as his visit coincides with that of US vice-president Joe Biden - both of whom will bring large security details with them.

But on a political level it also presents problems for the government. In February 2014, when Trump bought the Doonbeg resort, he was met at Shannon Airport with a red carpet reception led by finance minister Michael Noonan.

But Enda Kenny labelled his commentary as 'racist and dangerous' in the Dáil earlier this week, and opposition parties do not want Trump to be hosted.

Both the Green Party and the Anti-Austerity Alliance have announced plans to protest Trump's visit, though Government sources have insisted that he will be visiting only as a tourist and will not be met with a formal reception.

One minister who previously described him as a 'misogynist' says he's willing to meet  Trump - to say it to his face.
