Students might not have to wear school uniforms when they return to the classroom in September.

The Irish Mail on Sunday reports that a principals organsiation is calling for school uniforms to be abandoned.

President of the National Association of Principals Alan Mongey says that washing uniforms every day could prove impossible for some parents.

He said: "There has been some discussion about this and it’s something that needs to be considered and could certainly inform part of the guidance that will be issued in relation to return to school hygiene practices."

He said and allowing kids to wear their own clothes would allow them to more easily maintain hygiene standards.

The HSE's guidelines for creches and playschools includes advice on laundering clothes in instances where a child is infected with Covid-19

Specific guidelines on uniforms and other health and hygiene practices for schools will be developed over the coming weeks.
