The outgoing body of the World Anti Doping Association says sanctions could be tougher.

David Howman was responding to a call from Junior Sports Minister Michael Ring to penalise countries that allow doping ahead of this summerÂ’s Rio Olympics.

Mr Howman says governments have a role in targeting all those who facilitate doping;

Three athletes failed doping tests carried out by Sport Ireland last year, two of whom were in motor sports and Gaelic Football.

910,000 euro has been earmarked for anti-doping testing for this year – more than 17 thousand euro a week.

Sports Minister Michael Ring says that money could be better spent on sport itself, and is calling for cheating to be stamped out.
