"We Are Alone Against Russia" - Ukraine President Makes Plea To West

Ukraine's president has made another plea to western allies - saying "we are alone" in defending his country from Russian forces.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy says nearly 140 civilians and soldiers died on the first day of Moscow's military operation in his country.

There's been more reports of explosions and sirens around the country's capital, Kyiv, and the UN's estimating 100,000 people have fled their homes.

The Ukrainian foreign minister compared "horrific rocket strikes" on the capital to the city's 1941 shelling by Nazi Germany.

Journalist Neil Hauer spent the night in a bomb shelter in Kyiv.

He says people there are either "hunkering down or trying to get out".

EU Leaders Agree To Harsher Sanctions

In response, the EU says its new sanctions on Russia will have 'maximum impact' on its economy and 'political elite'.

They were announced after a lengthy meeting of the European Council in Brussels last night, which was attended by Taoiseach Micheál Martin.

The EU says they include 'massive sanctions' on Russia's banking, energy, transport and technology sectors.
