A new law has been introduced in the UK which will allow learner drivers to practise their skills on motorways.
It's designed to give new drivers more experience and confidence after passing their test.
In Ireland, learner drivers are currently not permitted to drive on motorways - but should we be following the UK's lead?
Tony Toner, Training Director with the Institute of Advanced Motorists of Ireland, feels that the driving standard on motorways leaves a lot to be desired as it is, and that learner drivers should not be permitted on them until they are really ready.
"The time to teach them is not the novice stage, it's post-test when they have attained a level of competency that has been assessed by an examiner."
Our regular motoring correspondent Michael Sheridan agrees that training is important and that "Irish people have proven we don't really know how to use motorways."
He thinks that the UK has been very forward-thinking in their methods of assessment and that the new law will prove vital in training people to become better drivers.
