Sport is great, right? It gives people the opportunity to learn new games, interact with others as a teammate or club member, boosts confidence and teaches you to work hard in order to win. But that's not always the case.
Sometimes it can be quite cruel as you have a player who isn't the most skilled or gifted left out. Even though they train to the best of their ability, and would do anything for the team, they are cast aside, lucky to get the odd run out here and there.
Then there is the politics involved. As any sportsperson would know (through their own experiences over the years), fairness doesn't come into play when certain players are chosen for suspicious reasons.
One man who wants to put a stop to this and level out the playing field (a fitting pun) is Fine Gael Senator Neale Richmond. Neale has proposed we introduce a 'Half Game Rule' which would ensure each player on a team got equal amount of game time - irrespective of ability.
It's an initiative already employed across Wales and New Zealand (U-7's to U-16's), and if the Senator can get the support of 'The Big 3' (IRFU, FAI & GAA), it could be rolled out across Ireland in the not-so-distant-future.
Neale hopes to take it a step further and introduce it into amateur adult sides too.
On this morning's Dermot and Dave, the lads chatted to the FG man about where this desire has stemmed from and how this would be of benefit to all ages.
The opposition to the movement is puzzling as he says, "the people who seem to be most against this are the people who aren't involved in sport at all".
So what do you think? Do you think it would be a help or a hindrance? There was a huge reaction to it on the show, with the general feeling being that the new rule would be a blessing.
