"What's a video?" I hear some of you young'uns ask.
Well back in the day, before everything was available at the touch of a button, one had to work for their entertainment. And people of a certain vintage (me) remember these days very fondly.
Before Blue-ray and DVDs hit the scene, VCRs (videocassette recorders) were the dog's proverbials.
Back in the 80's and 90's there wasn't such a selection of stuff on TV and 'streaming' was still in hyperspace, so we had to make do with rentals if we wanted to watch a good flick.
Anyway, I'm sure you know what I'm on about, so let's do a Doc & Marty McFly on it.
Dermot and Dave researcher Seán Reidy was at home in Clare recently when he stumbled across a box under the stairs (aka the Bermuda Triangle of the home) that was full of old videos from Xtra-vision. One of which was a looooooong overdue rental.
How long? 26 years...that's most of his adult life.
This brought us on a trip down nostalgia alley, back to the days when a fiver would get you a movie and enough treats for two people.
The lads put it out to the Today FM listeners to see if their memories were as romantic as ours, and the stories came flying in.
Who could forget the shame of fines, the room temperature 1.5l bottles of fizzy drinks, using other people's accounts unknown to them, the social awkwardness of hovering and chancing your arm in the 'adult' section when you were a teen?
Let's just hope Seán has that €14,235 fine handy.
