Wordsmith Level: Jedi
As we're all aware, new words and phrases enter our world regularly, but you'd never think that our country invents over 3,000 Irish ones each year alone!?.
Well I say 'our country', but it's actually a very small team who make this happen.
Ireland has only two full-time terminologists, one of whom is Dr. Gearóid O'Cleircin, lecturer at DCU's Fionar agus Scoil na Gaeilge. He also works at tearma.ie, and is a member of the elite committee who make the magic happen.
These words come about from pop culture, fashion trends, food fads and are known as 'buzzwords'. And they can be tricky to change into gaeilge as some of the portmanteaus and phrases get lost in translation.
On Dermot and Dave this morning, Gearóid educated us on how the words are created, and how there are often more than one example.
