The Winter Olympics are in full swing, and as you may have noticed we have with a couple of athletes representing Ireland. The thing is that we also have professional Irish skaters taking part in competitions across the world all throughout the year, but they have to move abroad in order to compete.
"Why is this?", I hear you as. Well seeing as we have no full time, full sized rink(s) in the country, the athletes have to pack up and leave if they want to pursue a future in any of the events.
To help us figure it all out, we invited Sean Gillis, who is Communications and Media Director of the Ice Skating Association of Ireland, into studio this morning.
Sean gave us some insight into his background, educated us on the work they do, told us the recreational value of having rinks and highlighted some of the honours achieved by Irish skaters.
We loved his sign off too.
