A man whose wife died of cancer, just days after their wedding, has described how her death led to his world being "turned upside down".

In December 2016, Noel Byrne proposed to Kathy after 10 years of dating.

One year later, Kathy was diagnosed with terminal cancer at the age of 29.

It meant wedding planning was accelerated, with most of the ceremony organised within 24 hours.

On January 14th 2018, Noel and Kathy were married in front of friends and family at the Mater private hospital.

Speaking in Dublin's National Stadium at Today FM's National Day of Dancing in aid of the Irish Cancer Society, Noel said the day brought so much happiness to Kathy.

He said "Kathy got to have her walk down the aisle, we got to do the first kiss, and it was a beautiful ceremony."

Sadly, two days after the ceremony, Kathy passed away.

Noel says he was devastated by his wife's death "We had the high of the marriage on the Sunday and Monday, and then utter devastation from the Tuesday because our whole world had been turned upside down".

Following Kathy's death, Noel drew on the strength she showed following her diagnosis.

He said "She was presented with this diagnosis, she was face to face with death. Yet she was so strong and so positive".

"If I can draw on a little bit of that strength then I can get through this".

"There are times when it is tough, and you do have dark days. I had one over the weekend."

Today thousands of people nationwide have become a dancer for cancer to raise funds for the Irish cancer society.

This morning alone, €25,000 has been raised.

We want to hit the €50,000 target by the end of today.

To donate you can text the word DARE to 50300 to give €4 to the Irish Cancer Society or head to Cancer.ie/dance
