A listener was in touch with the show who had some questions and was looking for advice as he thinks he may be an alcoholic.

This was a message that needed and deserved input from someone who really knows and understands the subject, so Mairead spoke to Dr. Colin O'Gara, Consultant Psychiatrist and Head of Addiction Services at St. John of God's.

Colin told Mairead that it's not as straightforward as either in or out of the category of being an alcoholic, and we have moved more towards a spectrum of alcohol use disorder.

He also spoke about the effects alcohol consumption has on your health, and advised that anyone who has questions about their drinking can speak to their GP who will advise on what action might be needed, and what help is available.
