In the wake of the illegal adoption scandal, we heard from one woman affected.
Susan Kiernan was adopted from the Sorrento nursing home in Cabra Park in 1949 when she was two days old.
Her adoptive parents never told her about the situation, and she only found out from a school friend when she was ten years old.
"I had super parents and I had a great childhood, but I was devastated by the fact that I wasn't actually theirs."
As Susan was particularly close to her father and didn't want to upset him, she only started searching for the truth after he died in 1998.
There was no trace of an adoption application, and her adoptive parents were listed on her birth certificate, making it impossible to find out her birth mother's name.
It was only when she was pregnant with her own daughter that she realised she had no medical history that she knew of.
Susan says, "I didn't want to cause any upset or hurt to anybody, because I had a good life." But it is very important to her to establish where she came from, and she would be willing to do a DNA test to try to find biological relatives.
Se says she feels sorry for the people who still don't know they're adopted.
"I dread to think that maybe I might have been one of them because my parents never mentioned it to me when I was small."
