Plans are underway for the regeneration of St Michael's Estate in Inchicore, which would see 472 housing units constructed. Of these, 330 would be cost rental properties and the remainder social housing.
Housing Minister Eoghan Murphy explained that this would allow people to rent at an affordable price, as they would be able to rent at below the market rate for a longer term.
The Minister also denied suggestions that workers in essential services, such as teachers and nurses, would be given priority.
"That's not the case. We're not going to be defining this by what someone is doing in terms of jobs. We need to strike a balance here."
"There's lots of important jobs in the economy, and to try and design a scheme where you're just saying these particular jobs would be very unfair."
Neil McDonnell of ISME says he welcomes any affordable accommodation measures the government can bring in, and is relieved to hear public service workers will not be prioritised.
"I think that would have been very problematic for people in the private sector as public servants on average earn 39% more than private sector workers."
