Earlier this month Garda stats revealed that almost 950 drivers were arrested on suspicion of drink or drug driving over the Christmas period.

One in ten of these drivers were found to be over the limit having consumed alcohol the night before.

Under recent changes to the Road Traffic Act, drivers who have between 50-80mg of alcohol for every 100ml of blood will receive an automatic three-month driving ban and a €200 fine.

Several TDs from rural constituencies have criticised these measures and people's fears of being pulled over at early morning Garda checkpoints while driving their children to school.

Michael Fitzmaurice, Independent TD for Galway-Roscommon, and Leo Lieghio of the Irish Road Victims Association discussed this.
