In an age where so many of us rely on social media to get our information quickly, it might seem surprising that there is actually a low level of trust in it.
A new survey by Edelman shows that just 25% of British people trust social media, and we could soon see similar figures in Ireland.
But why is this?
Caoimh McCrory of Insight Consultants and social media psychologist Amy Orben joined us to discuss this.
Caoimh thinks social media is "so busy that it's very hard to determine what is fact and what isn't." 61% of the public have full trust in traditional media.
She adds that there is now a "thirst for fact" and that people are getting sick of social media influencers and advertising. In contrast, 61% of the public have "full trust" in traditional media.
What are the solutions?
According to Caoimh, more education is needed to increase trust, influencers and brands need to be more transparent about who they're working with and companies need to be stricter. about how their employees use social media.
