Bradley Wiggins has been criticised for attempting to claim Irish cyclist Sam Bennett as British.

Speaking on Eurosport after Bennett won a stage of the Tour de France, Wiggins said, "We can almost consider him British."

He then turned to Sean Kelly, who was also appearing on the programme, and added: "I know that you lot won't like that, will you?"

Wiggins continued: "At least we can understand what he's saying, we can't understand what you're saying Sean, can we?"
