David Gillick is best known for his successful sporting career as a 400m sprinter and Olympian, winning two European indoor titles.
He is the author of a new book, Back on Track, which presents his four-part plan for wellbeing. It addresses the importance of balance through mindset, movement, rest and diet.
After retiring from athletics, David struggled with a loss of focus which then developed into depression. He says retirement is similar to experiencing a death, and that his identity, confidence and self-esteem had all been tied up in his sport.
"I put my whole life into it. I felt that if I didn't have a plan or a goal, that was almost a sign of weakness, and I didn't want to portray that."
"I didn't know who I was or what I wanted to do, and that scared me."
David says Back on Track is both a cookbook and a healthy lifestyle book.
"It elaborates more on the holistic approach to wellbeing. I wanted to be honest with myself and with everybody else and say, this is how low I got."
At his lowest point, David struggled with suicidal thoughts. His road to recovery began when he first opened up about how he was feeling. He subsequently started counselling, which he describes as "the best thing I've ever done."
"My mental health is something I'm going to be managing for the rest of my life, but I understand that and I've realised the simple little things that I can do that can get me back on the straight and narrow."
