The Dáil has voted to set the digital age of consent at 16.

This means the government's plan to set it at 13 has been defeated.

Is it a good idea?

Harry McCann, founder of the Digital Youth Council, thinks yesterday's decision was ridiculous, as it will allow young people the opportunity to lie about their age.

He says that through companies trying to monitor age "will have more data than ever before, really personal information about individuals to track their age. They'll be taking data and profiling it."

Sebastian Hamilton, editor of the Irish Daily Mail, says the idea that more young people will lie about their age is "a bizarre argument."

"The notion that Facebook and these billionaire tech companies, which have facial recognition, don't have the technology to check age is rubbish."
