Following on from last week's discussion on child safety online and the appropriate age to have a smartphone, should phones be banned in schools?
Maria Doyle, outgoing president of the Irish Primary Principals Network, and Brian Mooney, guidance counsellor and assistant principal at Oatlands College in Dublin, joined us to give their thoughts.
Maria says there is "no good reason" for primary-aged children to have phones in school.
"When we buy that phone for a child, we are effectively giving children what could be a very dangerous tool if they are not taught how to use it properly and how to stay safe."
Brian adds that there has been "a huge decrease in young people's social skills as a result of mobile use."
"Young people are losing the social skills of communication, even with each other. The normal social interaction and the things that you learn are effectively missing."
