Jodie Whittaker made her long-awaited debut as the first ever female Doctor in the new series of Doctor Who, which kicked off on Sunday night.

So far, so good, as 8.2 million viewers in the UK tuned in to watch the episode, with a further 1.4 million watching it simulcast on BBC America.

The figures surpassed those for previous Doctors David Tennant, Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi.

Interestingly, more girls than boys under the age of 16 watched the episode - 378,000 v 339,000. And it wasn't just the viewing figures that were impressive, as critics praised Whittaker's portrayal of the character.

Ed Smith and Melanie Finn discussed this and more in our weekly TV slot.
