The GAA have refused to give permission for Páirc Uí Chaoimh in Cork to host a benefit match for the late footballer Liam Miller in September.

It is due be held instead at Turner's Cross, which has a much smaller capacity.

Roy Keane is among those involved in organising the match, which will raise funds for the former Republic of Ireland international's family.

Councillor Mick Finn is Lord Mayor of Cork and a member of the organising committee for the match. He says the GAA's current rule is that any venue other than Croke Park has to go before congress before other types of sporting events can be held there.

Larry Ryan, sports journalist with the Irish Examiner, says there is nothing in the rules to allow them to stage the game, but that it goes beyond sport.

"This is a charity event more than a soccer game. It's not a competitive event so there's no ideological reason why the game couldn't take place there."
