Consumer scams are particularly widespread at the moment, with three out of four internet users targeted.

According to Charlie Weston, personal finance editor with the Irish Independent, they have reached epidemic proportions.

Gardaí are warning people about a broadband scam which has cost consumers hundreds and, in some cases, thousands of euros.

People have reported calls from scammers who claim to be from Eir, informing them about a problem with their broadband. The scammers then request access to the victim's computer, where they install malicious software and are able to access their bank details.

Charlie joined us to speak about this and other prominent scams including free smartphone scams, tax refund, Bitcoin and rent scams.

The most important thing to remember is to never call these numbers back, and never give out your bank details over the phone.
