This year's Celebrity Big Brother has had its share of controversy so far, as Roxanne Pallett accused fellow housemate Ryan Thomas of punching her - but then retracted her claim.
Pallett admitted several days later that she had overreacted and misjudged what was in fact a "playful" incident, and apologised to Thomas for the accusation. Some of her former Emmerdale co-stars took to social media and branded her a liar.
There have been suggestions that false allegations such as this could potentially be damaging to the #MeToo movement and the willingness of genuine abuse survivors to come forward, as well as damaging to the reputations of those who have been falsely accused.
Journalist Larissa Nolan feels a "mass hysteria" has developed from the #MeToo movement, which Pallett was caught up in.
"It's a false accusation, and it's either at best false memory and at worst vindictiveness."
"I think it's bad for societal perception of victims - you're going to bring in people who make false allegations alongside genuine victims, and you're throwing away the old presumption of innocence."
Cliona Sadlier from the Rape Crisis Network points out that "2% of allegations that we know of are false. The first thing to note is that the allegation was frivolous and was withdrawn very rapidly."
"It's important that we talk about how everyone around responded to this. What we have here is an orchestrated situation where you're trying to get heightened emotions and trying to get people to be interesting and entertaining."
