Despite the recent economic crash, there are many people from Cork who feel things were far worse there in the 1980s.
Michael Moynihan is the author of Crisis and Comeback: Cork in the Eighties, which tells the story of how the city hit rock bottom and bounced back again.
He says, "You had so many flagship industries going that were really part of the identity and fabric of the city."
"It was a huge blow to people psychologically."
The lack of jobs resulted in mass emigration.
"Growing up in the '80s, you couldn't envisage a time when you would see a 'help wanted' sign. It was just accepted that there were no jobs, there never would be any jobs, and the best bet was to get the boat."
In recent years, companies like Apple have helped to revitalise Cork and attract other industries to the city.
"You couldn't overstate the significance of Apple. It became a marker of Cork's success."
