As well as winning two All-Ireland medals with Meath, Liam Hayes has written a number of sports books.
He has now published his first novel, You Haven't Got All the Time in the World... Heidi Wells, which was written while he was receiving treatment for cancer.
Liam was first diagnosed with cancer in 2010, and says he "thought the world had stopped turning."
It returned in 2015 and he had a further five months of chemotherapy and three years of follow-up treatment, which finished in January. Although Liam's cancer is now in remission, it is a recurring form and he has been told that it will definitely come back at some stage.
Liam says he had always wanted to write a novel but didn't know where he would start. He began writing Heidi Wells in St James's Hospital, "because you spend a lot of time sitting on chairs in waiting areas."
The book tells the story of a woman who discovers the day either she or her twin sister will die, and how she deals with this information. Liam describes it as "a little bit Stephen King."
The story was inspired by the idea of fate: "If I knew what day I was going to die, how would I spend my time and what would I change?"
"I would be fearful, but I would want to know. What would be the downside of knowing that you had two years left? It might be a terrible thing, but it's two years to really make changes and live your life."
