A child's First Holy Communion is an important time for many families.

Although the ceremony itself is the main aspect of the day, parents will often spend a lot of money on their child's outfit and accessories, as well as catering, transport, photographs and gifts.

According to a recent report, the average Irish household spends €1,000 on the big day, indicating that the days of the Celtic Tiger Communion are back.

But how much is really appropriate to spend on your child's Communion day?

Charlie Weston, personal finance editor with the Irish Independent, discussed this issue and gave some money-saving tips for the day.
