As the Christmas party season gets underway and our streets are busier, how safe do you feel on a night out?

Cliona Sadlier, Executive Director of the Rape Crisis Network Ireland, says there is no proof that there is an increase in risk over the Christmas period compared to any other time of year, and that women's freedom of movement is not the problem.

"We need to focus on what actually is the problem, which is the choices being made by the people who target them."

Siona Cahill, President of the USI, says it's important to make practical personal safety plans for nights out. These include eating and being properly hydrated beforehand, knowing what you're drinking, ensuring someone knows who you're with and informing them if your plans change.

Colette Browne, columnist with the Irish Independent, says "the perception of risk that's out there is much greater than the actual incidence of reported crimes" and that we need to question whether we're more scared than we should be and think about how that fear is impacting our lives.

Joe Herron from the Irish Taxi Drivers Federation also joined us to outline the steps people can take if they suspect their taxi may not be legitimate.
