Most people have experienced the misery of a hangover, but what can you do to avoid it?
Dr Ray Walley gave some advice in his weekly medical slot.
A hangover is a sign that you have over-indulged, but might also be an indication that you are doing so too often.
Contrary to popular belief, consuming more alcohol as a hangover remedy will not do any good.
Alcohol not only dehydrates, but passes vital nutrients out of the body. Therefore drinking water and eating well to replace these lost nutrients is the best way to recover.
Drinking water in between alcoholic drinks is also a good way to lessen the impact of a hangover the next day.
As well as the physical damage that drinking too much can cause, particularly to the liver and heart, it can also have a negative impact on your mental health.
Since alcohol is a depressive, it should not be used to help you sleep.
