What happens when your car becomes old and unwanted, but uneconomic to repair?

As our motoring expert Michael Sheridan explains, it used to be the case that you had to take it to a scrapyard if you couldn't sell it, but that's no longer the case.

Since 2015, it has been a European requirement for 95% of the weight of a car to be recyclable. There are now a number of authorised treatment centres who will take your vehicle apart and recycle it, issuing the owner with a certificate of destruction.
