A new bilateral agreement with China was finalised in Beijing today.
As part of the deal, Irish whiskey has secured 'geographic indication', a legal protection which means only whiskey produced in Ireland can carry the Irish whiskey label.
This protection will also cover Irish cream liqueurs and will provide legal recourse, for action to be taken against fake Irish whiskey and cream liqueurs that appear on the Chinese market.
