Continuing our build-up to the World Cup, we looked at whether Russia is an appropriate location to host the tournament.

The country has a known history of hooliganism and racism at sporting events, and the Winter Olympics in Sochi were also marred by corruption.

So why was Russia chosen for the World Cup?

Sports writer Ewan MacKenna thinks money has a lot to do with it: "A lot of money is at stake, and people behind the scenes tend to work together when that's the case."

Ewan feels it is essentially Putin's tournament, and that his aim is "to show the rest of the world that he is the centre of the globe for the next few weeks."

"A great part of Putin's power is telling his country people that the world hates them, therefore they need a strong leader, and that he is that strong leader."

Bryan MacDonald, a journalist based in Russia, knows a lot about the history of hooliganism and racism in the country.

"The roots of hooliganism in Russia go back to the 1970s in the Soviet Union. In the 1990s it got out of hand and there were organised fights between fans in city centres."

He believes the fact that there are very few black people in Russia has partly contributed to a culture of ignorance: "As someone who's lived in Russia for seven of the last eight years, I think a lot of racism is rooted in pure ignorance rather than ill will."
