With the referendum on the Eighth Amendment just days away, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar joined us in studio to discuss what it will mean and why he is in favour of a repeal vote.
The Taoiseach says that "abortion in Ireland is already a reality" and that the Eighth Amendment has only succeeded in exporting our problems and importing solutions, which he doesn't think is sustainable.
"There's a certain hypocrisy in the current situation whereby we have in our constitution an almost absolute ban on abortion, and yet we also have the right to information about it and the right to travel abroad to end your pregnancy."
Concerning the right to life of the unborn, the Taoiseach feels the point of viability - when a baby can survive outside the womb - is "fundamentally different to a day or two after conception."
"I don't think that a six-week-old foetus has the same right to life as my sister."
His says his views on abortion have changed over time, since hearing the views of women he knows and stories from those who have gone through crisis pregnancies.
"What we've had in Ireland is a very convenient safety valve."
"We've allowed abortion to continue by just turning a blind eye and I don't think that's right. That's not what a modern society should do."
